🎧 Building Winning Products with “The Playlist”

I recently watched The Playlist on Netflix. It is a fictional documentary series that explores Spotify’s journey from being a scrappy startup to what it is right now, a global music streaming giant. And here are three key insights I want to share with you on building winning digital products:

🎧 Obsess with providing the best user experience

In the series, Daniel Ik, the mind behind Spotify, is portrayed as being wholly fixated on creating the best user experience possible. He clearly recognized the frustrations music lovers faced back in 2006 when music was downloaded using pirate bay and Utorrent client. There were issues like slow downloads, buffering issues, and people were exposed to irrelevant and annoying ads.

Daniel wanted to solve all these problems and make listening to music very easy and efficient. He wanted the technology to be so good that he was adamant about having the streaming speed of songs down to just 0.1 seconds so music lovers could enjoy it.

Now, that’s customer obsession!

🎧 Embrace Challenges

Spotify's software developers faced the challenge of building a platform that could stream music at 0.1 seconds, which seemed almost impossible back then. However, they did not give up.

They worked and found an engineering solution to a user problem that had never been solved before and did it beautifully and cost-effectively. There is an entire episode of how they did it, so you can geek out on it!

Even the founders of Spotify had no clue that they’d find themselves grappling with major music labels over copyright issues when they first started. And instead of being deterred, they embraced the challenges head-on.

All this exhibits valuable lessons in not shying away from obstacles but seeing them as opportunities for growth and innovation.

đźŽ§ Harness the Power of Collaboration

Each episode in this Netflix series is shot from the perspective of all the key characters or team members involved in building Spotify.

It starts from Daniel to the software developer, followed by the struggling and upcoming singer artist, the legal representative who came up with subscription business model, the ADHD’er co-founder Martin who took the risk and invested early on, and the music label representative. Each episode highlights the perspective of their challenges and their contribution in bringing Spotify to life.

The underlying theme? You ask.

Collaboration.

You can see that the collective effort of an entire team is what transforms an idea into a successful product.
